Panama City packs an unusual amount of variety into one destination — a UNESCO-listed colonial old town, one of the busiest shipping canals on Earth, rainforest close enough for a half-day trip, and indigenous communities still living by their own traditions less than an hour from the skyline. The hard part isn’t finding something to do. It’s picking the right day tour for the time you actually have.
Here’s how we’d break it down, tour by tour, based on what each one is actually good for.
If it’s your first time in Panama City: the Panama City Highlights Tour
This is the one most first-time visitors should start with. It’s a private, guided introduction to the city — Casco Viejo’s colonial streets, the causeway, and the contrast between old and new Panama — led by a local English-speaking guide who’ll fill in the history as you go, not just point at buildings. Runs about 4.5 hours, from $150 for two people, and it’s easy to add a lunch stop at the Fish Market or a restaurant of your choice.

If you want to see the Canal itself: the Panama Canal Tour (Atlantic Side)
Most visitors only ever see the Pacific-side locks near the city. The Atlantic side, out of Colón, is a full-day trip that takes you to two different canal lock systems plus the ruins of a colonial-era fort — genuinely a different experience from a quick Miraflores stop, and worth it if you care about the engineering and history, not just the photo. About 6 hours, $120 per person, 2-person minimum.
If you want wildlife: the Monkey Tour
A half-day boat trip through Gamboa and Gatún Lake, with a good chance of spotting free-roaming monkeys along the shoreline and Panama Canal ship traffic passing close by. It’s an easy add for families or anyone short on time — about 4.5 hours, from $250 for two people — and there’s an optional add-on hike through the Gamboa Pipeline Trail if you want to stretch the day.
If you want culture, not just sightseeing: the Emberá Village Experience
This is the one to book if you want more than photos — a boat ride into an Emberá community for an immersive visit into one of Panama’s indigenous cultures, with lunch included. It runs longer than the others (4.5–5 hours) and is priced at $130 per person, 2-person minimum, but it’s consistently the tour guests describe as the most memorable.

If you're short on time or just landed: Airport Pick-Up & Drop-Off
Not a tour, but worth knowing about — private, safe transportation between the airport and your hotel, with flat rates from $35 or hourly options if you need to make stops along the way.
